Alone and unarmed, the Spitfire spyplanes performed a crucial but dangerous role. Best-known of the wartime photo-reconnaissance Spitfires was the PR.Mk XI shown here, a dedicated PR platform with fully interchangeable camera installations, extra internal tankage and oil coolant, and an uprated engine which gave it outstanding speed and altitude.
