Pilots of Operation Migration train captive-bred whooping cranes to follow ultra-light planes as they would naturally their parents. They lead the birds 1,250 miles from a refuge in Wisconsin to wintering grounds on Florida's Gulf Coast. In subsequent years, the educated cranes migrate on their own.
